Festival

I have been photographing people at the three-day Green River Music Festival in western Massachusetts for the past 3 years. What started as a one-time plan has evolved into an ongoing project to document a small, but rich slice of life.

There is a spark that passes between people as they share their experiences. For me, the festival feels like a small, vibrant, city, made up of tiny, intimate neighborhoods with lives of their own. I shoot the festival as if it were the streets of a lively, temporary city.

There’s a flow to the life of the festival. I search for the brief moments when chaos balances with a certain indefinable order—everything comes together; currents and eddies meet, before moving on.

The stories hide inside these moments, like dreams, when people forget their everyday roles, and taste freedom unfiltered. We can’t see every detail with our conscious minds. The job of the images is to get us to feel the shadow of the dream.
